corban

corban
Something dedicated to God for a sacrificial purpose and not available for anything else, cf. Neh. 10:34. In a piece of anti-Pharisaic invective (Mark 7:5–13) Jesus is said to condemn neglect of duty to parents on the pretext of a vow (corban) to offer to God that which was due to them. If it seems inconsistent with this principle that Jesus places family responsibilities below that of discipleship (Matt. 10:37), it was part of Jewish eschatological expectation that at the great tribulation there would be family strife (cf. Mic. 7:6); this is a reference therefore to the immensities of the decisions entailed with the coming of the Kingdom.
